Gynecologic Surgery Without Quality Pre-Op Imaging is a Risk Factor for Inadequate Surgery
Presented by Drs. Dmitry Fridman and Mathew Leonardi: Ultrasound examination and interpretation of ultrasound images are critical skills in the practice of a GYN surgeon. With few exceptions, the decision to proceed with surgical intervention is aided by sonographic imaging. Ultrasound is a method of choice to diagnose uterine fibroids and describe their position (Stewart 2001). It is also critical in detecting and describing the nature of adnexal masses (Van Calster et al., 2015). Advanced sonographic techniques aid in detecting pelvic adhesions, (Guerriero et al., 2016) and even superficial endometriosis (Leonardi et al., 2019). Sonohysterography can guide operative planning for cavitary pathology (Goldstein 1996). In addition to its diagnostic benefits, ultrasound is widespread, inexpensive, safe, portable, quick in performing and frequently available in the point of care settings.
